Release International is calling for the release of a prominent Chinese Christian lawyer, amid growing concern that he could be charged with spying.
Zhang Kai, a Beijing human rights lawyer, has been defending churches in the courts against plans to demolish them and tear down their crosses.
Churches are being bulldozed in Zhejiang province and the communist authorities there have pulled down some 1200 crosses.
International observers believe the clampdown against visible signs of Christianity is intended to slow the rapid growth of the faith in China.
China has rounded up more than 200 human rights lawyers this year. They are holding Zhang Kai in a so-called ‘black jail’ at a secret location.
