PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION TO HEL P NORTH KOREAN REFUGEES IN CHINANorth Korea is one of the world’s most repressive regimes – and one of the severest persecutors of the Christian church. Every year thousands of North Koreans flee into China, making the dangerous journey along the so-called 'underground railroad' to find refuge in a neighbouring third country, such as Vietnam, Laos or Mongolia. The Chinese government does not recognise these North Koreans as refugees, but forcibly repatriates around 4,000 a year to North Korea, where they face imprisonment, torture and even summary execution. This violates the 1951 UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, which China has signed. Release is calling on supporters to collect signatures for our new petition from August-December 2008, after which this will be presented to the Chinese embassy in London. You may download the petition here (Adobe Acrobat format). The petition states:
'I wish to express my grave concern at China's treatment of North Koreans and the humanitarian workers who assist them.
I strongly urge the government of China to act compassionately towards the men, women and children escaping from the repressive regime of North Korea by granting them refugee status; halting their victimisation by human traffickers while in China; giving them safe passage to third countries; and by immediately stopping the forcible repatriation of North Koreans.'
As you collect signatures for the petition, please encourage the people you approach to join you in committing to prayer and support for persecuted Christians. Please encourage them to sign-up for regular information so they can receive our magazine Witness free of charge.
A4 POSTER
We have also produced an A4 poster that can be used to encourage people to sign the petition, which can be downloaded here. On behalf of our partners working with North Korean refugees in China: Thank you!
