Doing Time for God

"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you". Matthew 5:10-12

Many Christians are "doing time for God" in prison, suffering because of their faith in Jesus Christ and unfailing love for the Lord. Wrongly accused of blasphemy, they are enduring great hardship and may even be the subject of torture, beatings and punishment.

Can you "Do Time for God" by spending some time, writing, or protesting?

Our Advocates' Pack Doing Time For God is designed to help you -- please contact RI to receive the latest edition.

The Pack gives guidelines on letter writing, both to prisoners and your MP as well as some of the Embassies. A profile is given on each country together with a brief summary on each Prisoner which gives you help in your prayers.

Our Action below gives you the latest information on some of our Christian prisoners.

Writing - Make an impact on the prisoners' lives, by writing to the prisoner or their relatives. Our Pack advises you when it is safe and appropriate to write, but if you are not sure, contact our RI office for advice. Your letter will make a difference and tells the prisoner that they are not forgotten.

Speaking from prison, Rev Damanik said "Thank you for everyone who has prayed for me. I really felt the power of your prayers in prison and they strengthened my faith and gave me strength. I also want to thank all those who wrote to me. They really brought light into my life".

Protesting - Letters indicate clearly to the authorities that people in the West are aware of the Christian's plight. Write to your political representative asking them to write to the relevant Authorities about the injustice and inhumane acts of repressive regimes. You may send a fax to your MP here.

Our Advocates' Pack gives you guidelines on what to say and how to send the letters. It can be requested from RI by calling 01689 823491 (UK and Ireland only).

Your actions count

* "A prosecutor in Uzbekistan said he will not prevent an unregistered Baptist church and its pastor from meeting, because of the flood of protest letters he has received from around the world. He was fed up with reading them. As a result of the letters, a commission was sent to investigate the complaints and the threat of closing the church for refusing to register. As a result, the prosecutor is planning no further action."

Stories such as this shows that letters to government officials can work. Please continue to pray for believers in Uzbekistan facing pressure from authorities because of their faith.
