Pakistan: Pastor is beaten by police - five times

Oct 28 2008

A pastor from Punjab has been beaten up by police five times since April and is now receiving death threats.

Pastor Christopher Manzer, 55, believes the attacks have been instigated by a Muslim man, Nawaz, who blames the pastor for the loss of his wife and unborn child.

Nawaz married a Christian woman from Pastor Manzer's congregation after they both converted to Islam in order to elope. She soon regretted her conversion and filed for divorce. Five months after she left her husband and was welcomed back into Pastor Manzer's church, she died after a botched abortion.

Nawaz took Manzer to court over his divorce in January – but the case was thrown out. Then, in August, he registered with police false accusations of burglary and kidnap against Manzer and eight others.

In the intervening months, local police beat up Pastor Manzer five times: twice at home, twice at church and once at a police station. And he has received death threats by phone.

Ask God to heal Pastor Manzer and his family, physically and emotionally.

Pray that the local police will play their proper role as guardians of law and order.
