Thank God that He hears and answers our prayers! Our Pray 173 campaign was named specifically after the 173 prisoners of faith who have been behind bars and held in appalling conditions in Eritrea for more than ten years. Let’s continue to pray that all 173 of these prisoners will be set free… soon.
Please continue to pray for those arrested in Adi Quala in May. Pray for Feven and Mobae who are being held in Gerger prison on the Red Sea coast where temperatures soar. Ask God to sustain them and be their ‘protector, there at [their] right side to shade [them] from the sun’ (Psalm 121:5 CEV).
Zeray of Asmara Kale Hiwot Church was imprisoned in Me’eter prison camp but has reportedly been transferred recently to Mai Serwa army camp. Pray that Zeray will find fellowship and friendship among the other inmates, despite the appalling conditions. Pray that they will all ‘be encouraged in heart and united in love’ (Colossians 2:2).
Pastor Leul Gebreab, who is from the USA, has been in prison in Eritrea since 2007. He’s being held in Sembel prison. Pray that diplomatic efforts to secure his release will intensify and prove successful.
Pray that our Eritrean friends behind bars will hold on to hope and especially the hope that comes from knowing Jesus. Pray that they will have fresh encounters with Him this month and experience again their first love of Him.
A significant number of the Christians imprisoned in Eritrea since April are believed to have been incarcerated on Nakura, a notoriously tough prison island in the Dahlak archipelago in the Red Sea. Many of them were women and mothers, including Saba and Hiwet. Pray that God will restore these women to their families soon. Pray…
Pray for children who will be spending Christmas without one or more parents. Meaza, for example, who is imprisoned in particularly harsh conditions, is mother to nine children. Pray that the joy of Christmas and the love of Christ will comfort these precious youngsters, and renew their hope.
Wubet Yemane was only 16 when she was arrested and has been in prison for more than 12 years. That means that she has spent almost half her life behind bars. She’s now being held in Me’eter Prison. Pray that God will restore to Wubet ‘the years the locusts have eaten’ (Joel 2:25).
The latest reports from Eritrea say there are now 400 prisoners of faith there – which reflects a sharp increase in detentions in recent months. Pray for courage for all these prisoners and their families. Pray that they will not be afraid or discouraged, because the Lord is with them (Joshua 1:9).
Let’s stand with our Eritrean family and cry out in prayer: ‘O Come, O Come, Emmanuel!’ Please pray that Christians in Eritrea will know God is with them. Pray that the Holy Spirit will move powerfully in this East African nation and bring revival.
Today, on the first day of Advent , let’s pray that our Eritrean family, and especially those who are imprisoned for their faith, will have their hope renewed as they anticipate Christ’s birth at Christmas. Pray for real signs of change and reform in Eritrea to inspire and sustain this hope.
Ask God to bless all efforts to send encouragement and resources into Eritrea to help sustain a church which is under intense pressure. Pray that God will make the people and processes involved in this vital work invisible to the authorities.
The UN estimates that 5,000 Eritreans are leaving the country every month – many of them Christians – as the mass exodus of people fleeing repression continues. Pray in faith that God will build His church again in Eritrea and it will become a centre for Christian worship in East Africa.
A recent report by the UK’s All Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief says: ‘There are credible reports of female Christian prisoners [in Eritrea] being beaten on their wombs, allegedly to prevent them from bearing children.’ Pray for miraculous healings for women attacked in this way.
Pray for all those who are suffering torture in Eritrea’s prisons today. Pray that God will give His suffering people a deep peace that transcends all understanding and every circumstance, however appalling (Philippians 4:7). Ask God to sustain them, heal their wounds and help them keep their gaze fixed on Him.
Pray today for the prisoners of Me’eter prison on the Red Sea coast, a prison purpose-built to house predominantly Christians, and with a reputation for treating the inmates extremely harshly. At least three Christian prisoners of faith have died in custody there. Pray this prison will be shut down and its inmates released.
Please ask God to comfort and guide Ibrahim’s three children. His sons and daughter are all under the age of 13. Pray that God will indeed be a Father to those children whose fathers are behind bars for their faith. Pray that He will meet their needs while their earthly fathers cannot.
Ask God to be with ‘Ibrahim’ who is currently being held in Mai Serwa prison camp. He was raised as a Muslim but now has a strong faith in Christ. His wife, Seada, and their children are still in Asmara.
